Martha M. McCutchan, age 98, of Medora, ND died Wednesday, September 5, at the Belle Estate in Belle Fourche, SD.
The funeral service will be held 1pm Tuesday, September 11th, 2018 at the Medora Lutheran Church in Medora, ND with Pastor Roger Dieterle officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Internment will take place at the Medora Cemetery.
Martha Marie McCutchan was born May 10, 1920 near Hebron, ND. She was the daughter of Jacob and Selma Hoffer. Martha grew up on the family farm near Hebron, where she attended a country school. She graduated from Hebron High School and two years later she received her Teaching Certificate from Dickinson State University. Upon receiving her Teaching Certificate, Martha began teaching school in area country schools.
Martha was united in marriage to Charles “Blackie” McCutchan on July 24, 1942. The couple married shortly after Blackie enlisted in the U.S. Army, during World War II. After his service, Blackie and Martha settled near Medora where Blackie worked for several ranchers in the area. To this union four children were born: Carol, Mae, Beverly and David. In 1947 they purchased the Sloping Bottom Ranch, located south of Medora. Ranching was their life, their love and a wonderful place to raise their four children.
In 1958 Martha came out if retirement to teach at the Lebo School south of Medora and then retired again in 1967. Martha was a hard-working wife and mother. She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens, and was a gifted seamstress. She was also talented in the kitchen and was famous for her buns and fudge.
Blackie died in 2003, and in 2011, Martha moved to Belle Fourche, SD to be near her family. She will be remembered for her patience, determination, selflessness, and her love for her family. Martha was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.
Martha is survived by her children: Carol Thompson of Bismarck, ND, Mae Giacometto of Belle Creek, MT, Beverly (Ric) Ferron of Westcliffe, Co, David McCutchan of Belle Fourche, SD; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild,
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Ed, Fred, Bill, an infant brother Raymond; and sisters, Amelia and Ester.
