Kent William Sheffield was born October 15, 1968, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. Kent grew up in Buffalo, and graduated from Harding County High School in 1987. Kent also attended three years of college: one year at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota, and two years at Western Dakota Tech in Rapid City. For several years, Kent worked on the Joe and Cindy Painter ranch. He also built gun stocks at Dakota Arms in Sturgis and was employed by Olson Construction. Since 2000, he’s worked in the oil fields north of Buffalo, holding several positions, including Compressor Foreman, for Continental Oil.
Kent loved the outdoors. Hunting and fishing were a couple of his favorite pastimes. Ice fishing in the winter and fishing from the boat in the summer brought great joy and peace. In the fall, he loved to go rifle and bow hunting. One of his fondest memories is of harvesting a monster white tail buck. His hunting and his fishing trips with friends and family were some of the best times he had in life. He also enjoyed camping and many evenings found him playing cornhole with the close friends he loved so much. For several years, Kent was an avid bicycle rider, adding the completion of the entire Mickelson Trail in two days to his accomplishments. Kent had a soft spot for dogs, and he was blessed with two very special dogs, Megan and Rip. Megan was a golden retriever and Kent taught her many commands and some very humorous tricks like putting trash in the garbage can. On several occasions, he found his cap in the garbage because he had inadvertently placed it on the floor by his chair. Kent was an extremely hard worker, always paying attention to detail, and never left a task incomplete. He enjoyed learning, and would read all he could on subjects that interested him. He kept his emotions in check, always quite reserved, and his sense of humor tended to be on the dry side. Kent cared deeply about people and was a good listener. He was a great friend - loyal, kind, humble, and very generous. Kent had a heart of gold and he will be missed very much by so many people.
Kent is survived by his sister, Dena Matson-Smith of Sioux Falls; nieces and nephews: Hailey (Austin) Jordan of Rapid City, Preston Liedtke of Brookings, Cori (Matt) Lillia of New York, NY; Sydney Liedtke of Sioux Falls, Perri Liedtke of Nunda, SD; and Walter (Julia) Smith of Sioux Falls, and several great nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis Matson; sister, Sarrah Liedtke; and grandparents, Curtis and Sarrah Clark.
