Kenneth Albert Burghduff was born July 8, 1938 in Camp Crook, South Dakota where he grew up on the family ranch. He was the son of Kenneth and Edith (Turbiville) Burghduff. Kenny attended country school and rode horseback 1 ½ miles each day. In the winter of 1949, he was taken to school by a team of horses and sleigh due to the harsh weather. During the week he would stay with his teacher and her husband, Caroline and Joe Heggem, who lived near the school. In the eighth grade, Kenny would drive the teacher and other students to Buffalo for school events. No driver’s license was required back then. After grade school, Kenny helped his father and neighbors with ranch work. He also worked for the forest service in the Camp Crook area. In 1961 he volunteered for the U.S. Army, and served in active duty until 1963 at which time he continued his military service in the Reserves. During these years he was stationed at Camp Ripley Minnesota, Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, Fort Riley Kansas, and Fort Sill Oklahoma. He was honorably discharged in 1967. On November 25, 1964, Kenny was united in marriage to Lois Breding in Ekalaka Montana. To this union, three children were born: Beverly Kay, Kenneth Clinton, and Cleo Ray. Following their marriage, Kenny worked various jobs at Hulett WY and Belle Fourche, as well as Baker MT, ranching and driving truck. In 1982 he began leasing a ranch near Baker MT, and at Mud Butte SD in 1986. In 1992 he bought a farm near Newell and in 1999 he sold it and moved to Belle Fourche. Kenny worked for Belle Fourche Livestock and also sold hundreds of tons of iron when iron was at a good price. He built and sold steel calving chutes and cattle working alleys to ranchers all over the region. “Through my hard work I learned many things and also learned how not to do certain things.”
Kenny was a member of the SD American Legion and he was the last original member of the Bullock Community Club and helped with furnishing the hall. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren. Kenny said once, “One of my greatest accomplishments was raising three hardworking children, who gave me seven wonderful grandchildren.” Kenny loved his wife and family very much, and he will be greatly missed by them all.
Kenny is survived by his wife, Lois of Belle Fourche; daughter, Beverly Burghduff of Ollie Montana; sons, Clint (Annette) of Urbandale Iowa, Cleo of Belle Fourche; 7 grandchildren, Josey (Bryan), Kallie (Dalton), Rilee, Cody, Brook (Garrett), Adam Kenneth, Amanda; 2 great grandchildren, Bella and Brooks; brother, Gerald (Becky) of Camp Crook; and sister, Rhoda (J.O.) McDonald of Hulett WY. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Alice Johnson; brother, Rex; infant brother, Otto; and nephew Shawn Burghduff.
