Eleanor Mae Eickelman was born July 7, 1930 in Gettysburg, SD. She was the daughter of Albert and Margaret (Palmer) Eickelman. At the age of four, Eleanor moved with her family to Newell where they lived in the house on “Teaspoon Hill”. She graduated from Newell High School in 1948 and she was the last living member of her class. She earned her teaching certificate from Black Hills State Teachers College and following she taught in rural schools for six years. Eleanor was united in marriage to Keith Milberg on June 14, 1951 in Newell. To this union two daughters were born: Susan and Cindy. Following their marriage, Eleanor and Keith lived on the family farm located south of Newell for 33 years. Together they owned the Newell Recreation Bowling Alley from 1966 to 1976. Keith began an American Family Insurance agency and Eleanor worked alongside of him until their retirement in 1995.
Eleanor was a very active member of the Newell Community. She served as a 4H leader, and she was always participating at the Butte/Lawrence County Fair, winning many blue ribbons for her entries. She was a perfectionist when it came to her crafts and cookwares. She enjoyed quilting and sewing and crafts of many types, and she also loved to play golf. Tiger Woods was her favorite pro golfer, and she loved to cheer him on. Ice cream and extra hot coffee were some things she enjoyed as well. She was a member of the Newell Lions Club and was honored to have won the Melvin Jones Award several years ago. She was a noted historian for Butte County and wrote several articles for the Butte County Historical Society. She was an active member at her church, and she loved to read – especially at night. Eleanor was also very “tech savvy” when it came to her cell phone. She loved staying in touch with her kids and grandkids. A wonderful mother and grandmother, a beautiful person inside and out, Eleanor will truly be missed by her family and friends.
Eleanor is survived by her two daughters, Susan (Michael) Hencey of Rapid City, Cindy (Brent) Riley of Spearfish; four grandchildren, Bryan (Jessica) Riley, Carmen (Nate) Kersjes, Adele (Kaleb) Winton, Emylee Hencey; 7 great grandchildren; brother, Darrell Eickelman of Rapid City; sister-in-law, Kay (Dave) Kaul of Spearfish; and numerous nieces and nephews.
