Creta Lorraine Kokesh was born January 15, 1919 on the family ranch, near Sundance, Wyoming. She was the daughter of Hugh and Louise (Moller) Kokesh, and was the third of ten children. Creta grew up on the family ranch and attended grade school there as well. In 1936 she graduated from the Spearfish High School and in 1938 she graduated from Leota’s Beauty School which was located in Deadwood. During World War II, there was a young man named Leslie Noble Minor (he was known as Noble) stationed at Fort Meade. He would meet Creta and together they were united in marriage on November 5, 1943. To this union three children were born: Les, Leon, and Karen. Following their marriage, Noble left for the war and Creta lived in Cody, WY for a short time. After the war, Noble and Creta settled on a ranch located northwest of Belle Fourche. In 1955 they moved to the farm in Nisland. In 1968, Noble passed away.
For 25 years, Creta worked as the head cook at the John Burns Hospital and Belle Fourche Nursing Home, retiring in 1997. She lived in her own house past her 100th birthday. She was involved as a 4-H Club leader, and active in Extension Club, and she also enjoyed her craft club. She always had an exhibit at the Butte County Fair. She loved gardening, especially her flowers. She canned, crocheted, enjoyed playing card games, and she will be remembered for her homemade bread. Creta was a member of the Nisland church for many years, and after she retired, she enjoyed traveling. She loved her family and grandkids, and she always made it a priority to attend their events. She was a special mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and she will be missed greatly.
Creta is survived by her sons, Les (Sherry) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Leon (Jenni) of Nisland; daughter, Karen (Tom) Swan of Newell; 7 grandchildren, Alissa, Suzanne (Jim), Chris (Marcie), Jon (Emily), TJ (Sonya), Jamie (Justin), Tyler (Aspen); 16 great-grandchildren, Dawson, Jillian, Mitchell, Sydney, Chance, Caleb (Joanna), Lily, Layton, Kajsa, Kade, Kaicyn, Ketch, Jackson, Julianna, Jameson, and Joella. She was also survived by 2 sisters, Bertha Feeley of Spearfish, Julia England of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, James, Charles, Arthur, Joe, Freddie; and sisters, Margaret Ellsbury and Wynonna Lanning.
