Bernadine Furois was born May 12, 1930 in Deadwood.  She was the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Nicholas) Furois.  Bernadine grew up in the St. Onge area, where her parents owned and operated the general store.  Bernadine spent much time in that store, working along side her parents.  She attended grade school in St. Onge, 2 years at St. Martins Academy in Sturgis, and then graduated from Spearfish High School in 1947.  She was a very talented seamstress during those years, creating many articles of clothing.  In 1948 she won a trip to San Antonio Texas by winning a competition “Make It Yourself with Wool”, in which she made a wool coat.  Her talents continued all throughout her life as she made many quilts, crocheted, knitted, and cross stitched many types of crafts.

On May 20, 1950, Bernadine was united in marriage to Roy Hansen in St. Onge.  To this union four sons were born: Jim, Don, Ken, and Steve.  Following their marriage, Roy and Bernadine ranched north of St. Onge for 6 years.  In 1957 they purchased a ranch near Fruitdale where they raised hogs and cattle.  In 1993 they retired to Belle Fourche and in their retirement years they enjoyed taking their camper and traveling the country.  Roy died in 2018 after enjoying 68 years of marriage.  Bernadine spent more than 20 years helping at the Butte/Lawrence County Fair.  You would always see her in the pavilion and she always had several entries.  She enjoyed canning, gardening, and flowers and she was a wonderful mother and grandmother.  She will be greatly missed.

Bernadine is survived by her sons, Jim (Deb) of Vale, Don (Jo) of Spearfish, Ken (Pam) of Fruitdale, Steve of Panama City FL; 6 grandchildren, Nicole (Tom), Clinton, Kelly (Alicia), Matt (Angie), Wyatt (Sammi), Seth (Tina); 4 step-grandchildren, Tammie (Jeff) Westland, Connie (Steve) Hoven, Jennifer (Ian) Odle, Jared (Molly) Jambor;12 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Sister Therese Marie Furois of St. Martins SD, and Cathy Anderson of Sturgis.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, daughter-in-law, Vicki Hansen; and granddaughter-in-law, Cassie Hansen.
