Alvira Ager was born May 1, 1917 in Frederika, Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Pearl (Leech) Ager. At a young age, Alvira moved with her family to the Belle Fourche area where she attended school. At the young age of 12 she lived alone with her sister for a winter season during the “Dirty 30’s” in the Sulfa area near Mud Butte. During that winter the two sisters lived alone and maintained the farm by themselves. She was united in marriage to Pete Shear on June 19, 1936 in Deadwood. To this union 4 children were born: Bert, Bob, Janet, and Jeral. Following their marriage, they lived in Belle Fourche where Pete owned and operated S and S Trucking. Alvira worked 10 years at the sugar factory near Belle Fourche. She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, Past Matron for the Easter Star in 1961 and 1962, and in 2001 she became a member of St. James Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Naomi Circle, the Daughters of the Nile, and the Tirzah Club.
Alvira’s birthday was May 1st, which was also always the opening day of fishing. As a result, her and the family have many memories fishing on her birthday, and many memories as well in the steel boat that Peter made by hand. Alvira loved life, and she loved people. She would do anything to help someone. She was “Sassy and Classy”. She liked to be independent and she like to get up in the morning and make herself look nice. Her appearance was always very important to her. She loved playing cards, especially Bridge. Alivra loved her family so much, especially all her grandchildren. And they all loved her greatly as well. She will truly be missed and loved forever.
Alvira is survived by her children: Burt (Bobbi) Shear of Pahrump NV, Bob Shear of Belle Fourche, Janet (Jim) Shevling of Spearfish, Jeral (Dianne) Shear of Belle Fourche; 23 grandchiuldren; 31 great grandchildren; and numerous great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete in 1984; granddaughter, Cindy Shevling Myers; and 9 siblings: Helen, Dorothy, Reno, Grant, Laverne, Verla, Geraldine, Leone, and Mayda.
May God Bless the Memory of Alvira Shear.
