Gertrude Sorenson

Gertrude Sorenson, age 89 of Belle Fourche, died Wednesday October 20, 2010 at the Belle Fourche Regional Senior Care Center. The funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Monday October 25, 2010 at the Black Hills Gospel Assembly with Ken Riley officiating. Visitation will be held 2 to 6 PM Sunday at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held in Pine Slope Cemetery, in Belle Fourche. Gertrude Ella Schultz was born November 2, 1920 near Vale, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Rudolf and Martha (Feltcher) Schultz. Gertrude grew up 9 miles east of Newell, where she attended a country school. On June 28, 1952 she was united in marriage to Glendon Sorenson in Lead, South Dakota. To this union a son and a daughter were born: Glenda and Roger. Following their marriage Gertrude and Glendon lived in Belle Fourche. For 25 years, Gertrude operated a veteran’s rest home out of her own home. She also drove truck for many years with her husband and she bussed many people to hospital and clinic visits for many years. Glendon died in 2003. Gertrude will be remembered for her hard work and the amount of care that she had for people. She had a servant’s heart and was always looking for ways to care for people. She enjoyed traveling, especially her many trips to Canada. Gertrude is survived by her son, Roger (Kaja) Sorenson of Belle Fourche; daughter, Glenda (John “Jack”) Nikodym of Belle Fourche; 3 grandsons, Jesse, Ronnie, and Brandon Nikodym; great grandson, Maekin Nikodym; and sister, Maida (Alvin) Andrews of Rapid City; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Emma Van Kirk, Ida Mestmaker, Mary Jensen, Bertha Ollila; and brother, Gus Schultz.
