Mary Callison, age 89 of Spearfish, died Monday, March 5, 2018 at the Belle Estates in Belle Fourche. Funeral arrangements are with Leverington Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche. A private family service will be held Thursday. Mary Elizabeth Putnam was born June 26, 1928 in Powersville, Missouri. She was the daughter of Emerson and Ora (Ellis) Putnam. Mary grew up on a family farm near Powersville, where she attended country school. In 1944, at the age of 16, Mary graduated from the Powersville High School. Two years later, on April 24, 1946 she was united in marriage to Floyd Callison. (They were later divorced.) Following their marriage, they lived in Moline IL and eventually came to Iowa where they farmed in Floris and Eldon for several years. In 1974, they moved to Brandon, South Dakota and then in 1977 she came to Deadwood where she owned and operated the Killarney Motel for two years. In 1980, Mary moved to Spearfish and during the years she lived there, she worked for the Box Elder Job Corps. In 1983 she went to work for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Belle Fourche, and she retired in 1997. Mary will be remembered for being a determined and intelligent woman. She was a wonderful grandmother and she enjoyed quilting. She also enjoyed gardening and the many fruit trees that she raised. She will be missed greatly. Mary is survived by her daughter, Susan Callison of Gillette WY; sons, Jeff (Beth) of Cove OR, Charles (Cheri) of Spearfish, Stephen of Newcastle WY; 6 grandchildren, Jasmin Graham, Jason and Micki Callison, Heath Schmitz, Stevie Callison, Emma Musilek; 11 great grandchildren, Ava Satterlee-Graham, Elizabeth and Scott Callison, Tyler and Lattell Dotty, Rachael and Mason Schmitz, Braxton Callison, Steven Reimer, Yannis and Serina Callison. She is also survived by two brothers, Henry (Norma) Putnam of Missouri, and Edward (Maxine) Putnam of California; and sister, Lucille Davis. She was preceded in death by her parents; and son, Gary Callison.
