James Eugene Larive was born October 30, 1946 in Custer, South Dakota. He was the son of Robert and Mary Lou (Solaas) Larive. Jim grew up in Spearfish, where he graduated from high school in 1966. After attending Black Hills State University for one year, Jim moved with his family to Illinois, where he lived for several years. On August 8, 1970, he was united in marriage to Carol Tetrault in Bourbonnais, IL. To this union, three sons were born: James, Justin, and Jody. In 1986 the family moved to Spearfish. In 1990, Jim and Carol moved to Belle Fourche, where they have lived since. Jim worked many years in maintenance and for eight years he worked at the Walmart located in Spearfish. Jim was born with a creative and musical talent. He loved music before he could walk. He wrote several songs, played in many bands, and enjoyed entertaining many people in his lifetime. He was a talented oil painter and he created many painting and pencil sketches as well. Mechanics, arts, and music will live on in his three boys and his creative talent has been seen in his eight grandchildren. Jim enjoyed model trains, coffee, and he was a devoted Chicago Bears fan. Jim loved his wife and family very much and he especially loved his grandkids. Calling his mother was a daily activity that will now be missed so much.
