** Video Tribute Can Be Viewed Below ** Eleanor Bertrand, age 98 of Newell, died Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at the Belle Fouche Regional Healthcare Center. Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10:30am Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018 at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newell. Visitation will be held 4 to 6pm Monday at Leverington Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche. Interment will take place in Hope Cemetery, in Newell. Eleanor Tomich was born April 18, 1919 on the family farm near Orangevale, California. She was the daughter of Prosper and Eleanor (Petersen) Tomich. Her first education was in the Orangevale Elementary School, followed by San Juan High School. After high school, Eleanor attended Chico State College where she met Flavis Bertrand. They were later married in Carmichael, CA and together they established their home in Arbuckle CA where they raised their four children on the family almond ranch. During this time, Eleanor spent 21 years teaching elementary school in Arbuckle. In 1977, Flavis and Eleanor moved to Newell where they purchased their retirement home and enjoyed gardening and new friendships. Eleanor was blessed with a great sense of humor, a strong work ethic, and an amazing skill as a teacher. Her family was top priority to her. She was an excellent seamstress and made her own clothing for many years. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and she will be greatly missed. Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Ruth Bertrand of San Francisco CA; sons, John (Karen) of Caldwell ID, Paul (Denne) of Tifton GA; 3 grandchildren, Sean, Kelsey, Karin; 1 great grandson, Oliver; and brother, Tom (Lillian) Tomich of Orangevale CA. She was preceded in death by her parents; 4 brothers, Nick, Jack, Quentin, and Fred; and sister, Francis.
