Barbara Karinen

Barbara Karinen age 85 of Belle Fourche, died Tuesday August 4th, 2009 at the Spearfish Regional Hospital. The funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Saturday August 8th, 2009 in the chapel at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche. Rev. Eric Grinager will officiate. Visitation will be held 5 to 7 pm Friday at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche. Interment will be held in Pine Slope Cemetery, in Belle Fourche. Barbara Webb was born July 3, 1924 in Newell, SD. She was the daughter of Harry and Leora (Livingston) Webb. Barbara attended a country school in Butte County and later moved to Belle Fourche during her senior year where she lived with her sister. She graduated from the Belle Fourche High School in 1942. She attended a business school in Grand Island, Nebraska and afterward she did clerical work for the JC Penney store in Belle Fourche. On September 4, 1948 Barbara was married to Melvin Karinen. Since then, they have lived in Belle Fourche. In her younger years, Barbara was active with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in Belle Fourche. She also taught Sunday School. She was also very active with politics, and community affairs. She was an avid listener of talk radio shows and often would participate by “calling in” to the show. Barbara enjoyed working in her home and making changes to the interior of the house. Years ago, Barbara enjoyed her travel trips to various places in the country. She always remembered her long trip when she visited every national park west of South Dakota. She also enjoyed television shows like Jeopardy and Dancing with the Stars, and she was good at playing scrabble, card games, and puzzle games. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and will be missed greatly. Barbara is survived by her husband of almost 61 years, Melvin of Belle Fourche; son, Timothy (Cathy) Karinen of Grosse Isle, Michigan; daughters, Lora (Roger) Venjohn of Wessington SD, Cheryl (Pat) Wong of Tucson AZ, Jan (Bill) Allen of Everett WA; 3 sisters, Zona Maronek of Chicago IL, Yvonne Gray of Washington, Lois Bach of Ventura CA; 6 granddaughters; and 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers, Glen, Leroy, and Warren Webb; sister, Lurene; and her great granddaughter, Emily Brost.
