Sylvia Rose Hansen

July 7, 1922 — January 4, 2009

Sylvia Rose Hansen age 86 of Belle Fourche, died Sunday January 4, 2009 at the Spearfish Regional Hospital in Spearfish. The funeral service will be held 1pm Saturday at the Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche, with Rev. Paul Howard officiating. Visitation will be held 1 to 5pm Friday at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be held later this summer at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Belle Fourche Ambulance. Sylvia Rose Vitto was born July 7, 1922 at her grandmother’s log house near Alva Wyoming. She was the daughter of Wolly and Catherine (Giachino) Vitto. Sylvia grew up near Alva WY, and attended the Lame Jones School. She attended high school in Sundance WY for a time and later moved to Albina Oregon where she graduated from the Pendleton High School in 1941. Following school she worked at the Albina Shipyard during the daytime and at night she would attend night school. She was married to Sidney Marks in Spokane WA in the 1940’s. To this union, a son Sidney Alvin was born. Following their marriage they returned to Alva, WY and worked at the Vitto ranch. They later divorced. On May 19, 1954 Sylvia was married to Kermit Karlson in Kemmer, WY. To this union, two daughters were born, Nichol Lena, and Kota. Following their marriage they lived at Green River and later Belle Fourche. They later were divorced. On April 26, 1967, Sylvia was married to Lloyd Hansen in Belle Fourche. Following their marriage they lived in Belle Fourche where they operated a pilot car service for many years. Sylvia and Lloyd also played in a band, the “Country Drifters” for many years. Together they volunteered for many years at the nursing homes, assisted living centers, and the Senior Citizen Center. Lloyd died in 2003. Sylvia loved music and was self taught to play by ear piano, harmonica, accordion, and other instruments. For many years she babysat children and over the years took care of very many children in Belle Fourche. She also enjoyed sewing. Sylvia was a special person and will be greatly missed by her friends and family. Sylvia is survived by her son, Sidney Alvin Marks of Belle Fourche; step-son, Richard Hansen of Salem OR; daughters, Nichol Lena (and Dan Scoggin) Hall of Gillette WY, Kota (Randy) Myers of Belle Fourche; step-daughters, Darlene Anderson of Pierre, Donna Porter Maxwell of Rapid City, Ruth Ann (Dave) Kelley of Rapid City; granddaughter, Tella (Cefus) Moore of Gillette WY; step-grandchildren, Kelly Hall of Belle Fourche and Cheryl Puettz of Spokane WA; 3 great grandchildren, Cory, Curtis, and Cortney Moore all of Gillette WY; brothers, Harry Vitto of CA, Deloy (Jan)Vitto of CA, Don “Beaver” (Lori) Vitto of Hulett WY; sisters, Juanita Thomas of Hulett WY, Darleen Raber of Belle Fourche, Mary Hourt of Casper WY, Sally (Frank) Hible of Casper WY, Rose Anne Sheldon of Kenai AL. She is also survived by a very special family friend whom Sylvia took care of for many years, Norman Schnitger of Belle Fourche. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; step-daughter, Beverly Rabialoty; brother, Geno Vitto; and sister, Madelyn Campbell. Sylvia’s family would like to give a special “thank you” to “Single Jim” for all his entertainment provide to Sylvia through the mail. He is appreciated very much.
