Bertha Mae Reid

Bertha Mae Reid age 89 of Belle Fourche, died Saturday September 13th, 2008 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. The funeral service will be held 1 PM Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche, with Rev. Jeff Otterman officiating. Visitation will be held 5 to 7 pm Tuesday at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held in Pine Slope Cemetery, in Belle Fourche. Memorials are preferred to Northern Hills Hospice. Bertha Mae Walker was born July 16, 1919 in Camp Crook. She was the daughter of Henry and Anna (Wise) Walker. Bertha grew up on the family ranch near Alzada, Montana, in the Albion area. In 1939 she was married to Franklin J. Clem. To this union, two children were born: Marlene and Gary. Following their marriage they ranched in the Tater Hills area, near Albion and Alzada. Franklin died in 1967. Bertha was united in marriage to William F. Reid in 1969. Following their marriage they continued to ranch on Bertha’s land in the Tater Hills. William died in 1995. Bertha has lived in Belle Fourche since 1998. Bertha will be remembered for all her hard work on the ranch, and her love of the ranch life. She loved taking long country drives looking at the land and her livestock. She was faithful to feed all the men on the ranch; but also in putting much of her own labor into the ranch herself. She often recalled her many trips carrying buckets of water and feed up the hill to the livestock. Bertha was a private person and a very sharp lady. She enjoyed playing card games, and having “get-togethers” at her home. She will be fondly remembered for being called “Nanny” by her family. Bertha loved her family and close friends more than anything and she will be greatly missed by all of them. Bertha is survived by her daughter, Marlene Sheely of Sturgis; 6 grandchildren, Kevin (Tammy) Clem of Belle Fourche, Dena (Kevin) Werlinger of Sturgis, Cheryl (Jim) Schutterle of Billings MT, Darlene (Russ) Larson of Hermosa, Jenny Reid and Beth Reid both of Belle Fourche; 8 Great Grandchildren, Brian, Steven, Tammy, Zitur, Melissa, Kelli, Justin, Nichole; several great great grandchildren; step-son, Dick Reid of Phoenix AZ; numerous nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Dale (Marie) Morgan of Alzada MT; several generous and caring brothers and sisters in-law; and a very special friend of hers, Leone Moncur of Belle Fourche. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; son, Gary Clem; great grandson, Cory Clem; sister, Madeline Morgan; and brothers, Arthur, Sidney and William.
