Her parents homesteaded near Redig and she grew up on this ranch, actually spending most of her life there. She attended high school at Sturgis, graduating in 1951. She continued living on the ranch and following the death of her first husband, Wayne Stainbrook, she married Richard Smith August 28, 1963. They continued ranching cattle and raising Marie’s beloved sheep. She was really an extraordinary farm girl, raising chickens as well as her bum lambs and had names for most of them. Although Marie didn’t have any children of her own, she was like a “second mom” to many of her nieces and nephews. They spent many a summer spending time with her at the ranch. Marie was very active with several organizations including the Harding County Fair Board, receiving a 30 yr. service award. She loved to sew, cook, can, and take care of her flowers and was always helping others. She was a member of the Gideon’s and The Gospel Tabernacle Church in Buffalo. Marie is survived by her husband, Richard of Redig; and sister, Marjorie Lyons of Sturgis; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Wayne Stainbrook; sisters, Dorothy Farrell and Katherine Longden, as well as a nephew Stephen Longden.
