He was the son of Pius and Anna (Eberle) Lesmeister. At the age of 2, Herbert moved with his family to Ridgeview South Dakota, where he grew up on a family farm and ranch. In 1942 he graduated from the Eagle Butte High School. During World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Army from March of 1945 until November of 1946. During this time he was stationed in Okinawa. On December 8, 1951 Herbert was united in marriage to Dorothy Kearns at Cheyenne Agency, SD. To this union 4 children were born: Wayne, Michael, James, and Robert. Following their marriage Herbert farmed and ranched on his family place near Ridgeview for many years. Then in 1983 they purchased a place west of Belle Fourche, and he continued farming and ranching. Herbert enjoyed farming and working with his cattle. It seemed every spring he looked forward to plowing the soil and the planting season. Herbert was a hard worker and devoted to his wife and family, as well as his farm and ranch operation. Herbert is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy of Belle Fourche; and his 3 sons, Wayne of Belle Fourche, Michael (Sandy) of Belle Fourche, James (Deb) of Chadron NE; 7 grandchildren, Shawn, Justin, Kari, Cody, Crystal, Dillon, and Wyatt; and 3 great grandchildren, Shayda, Rhett and Mary Lynn.
