Wendelken Horman was born June 30, 1924 in Belle Fourche, SD and passed away December 8, 2012, in Belle Fourche at the Belle Fourche Regional Sr. Care Center. She was the eldest daughter of Ralph Wendelken and Anne Quarnberg Wendelken. Living in Butte County was the center of Sara’s life, just as the center of the nation is located near the ranch where she and her husband loved, labored, and lived. Sara was married to Harold G. Horman on July 8, 1945 in Broadus, Montana. Of their union, five children were born: Cathy Tingey, Ralph Horman, Penny O’Dea, Susan Snyder, and Harold G. (Jeff) Horman. Sara grew up on the Wendelken Dairy farm on the Redwater River south of Belle Fourche, SD. She attended the Lab School in Spearfish, SD from grades 1-6 and then transferred to the Belle Fourche school system graduating from the Belle Fourche High School in 1942. She then attended the University of South Dakota for two years. After earning her teaching certificate, Sara returned to Belle Fourche and began her career teaching second grade at the Lincoln School. At that time, she met and married Harold G. Horman on July 8, 1945. They began their 60-year marriage raising sheep ranching on Battle Creek. They later relocated to the Indian Creek Ranch, 17 miles north of Belle Fourche on Old Highway 85. There they raised their five children and sheep. After the death of Ida Horman, Harold, better known as Toar, and Sara moved to Belle Fourche in 1956 to care for Slim, Toar’s father, until Slim passed away in 1958. Toar then commuted daily to the ranch. During this time, Sara began substitute teaching in the Belle Fourche school system and completed her Elementary Education degree at Black Hills State College in Spearfish, SD. She resumed teaching third grade full time, and eventually moved to sixth grade. Sara taught sixth grade until she retired in 1987 after thirty years of dedicated service. By then the family had permanently moved to the ranch and Sara drove Toar’s route in reverse, from ranch to town. Sara was very active in the community. She was a past president and 50-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and also a dedicated member of the Delta Kappa Gamma teaching sorority. She lived on the ranch until 2007 when poor health forced her to move to the Belle Fourche Regional Senior Care. Sara is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Anne Wendelken, by her husband, Harold (Toar) G. Horman, her daughter, Penny O’Dea , and granddaughter, Michelle Sickels.
