Interment will take place in Pine Slope Cemetery, in Belle Fourche. Memorials are preferred to the Belle Fourche Fire Department. Marcella Joy Ellis was born June 10, 1920 in Platte, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Carl and Helen Joy (Pierce) Ellis. In the late 1920’s, Marcie moved to the Belle Fourche area with her family, when her father transferred to take care of the power plant that was located at the bottom of Redwater Hill. Her parents started a hatchery business there, that later was named Grandview Hatchery when they moved to Belle Fourche. Marcie started grade school in Platte, and graduated from the Belle Fourche High School in 1938. Following her graduation Marcie went to art school in Greeley, CO until the beginning of World War II. She then went to California to work for Avian Inc. during the war. When the war ended, she returned to Belle Fourche and worked for her parents at the Grandview Hatchery and Locker Plant. It was here where she met Fred Carlson, whose mother was employed by Marcie’s father. Fred and Marcie were united in marriage on June 29, 1947 at the Congregational Church in Belle Fourche. To this union three children were born: Virginia (Ginger), Barbara, and Fred (Fritz). Together Fred and Marcie owned and operated Grandview Hatchery and Locker Plant, and also Parkway Grocery in Belle Fourche for many years. These businesses are located across the street from the old Roosevelt school. Parkway Grocery was the place to go during lunch hours and after school. All of Fred and Marcie’s children and several of the grandchildren, as well as one great grandchild, have at one time in their lives worked at either the store or the locker plant. Fred and Marcie filled their “empty nest” by traveling the world. They visited Germany, Singapore, Australia, Alaska (4 times), Malaysia, and New Zealand. Together they enjoyed 65 years of marriage. Marcie loved people, and the door was always open at their home. She especially loved to hold the new babies and she loved to work in the many flower beds that surround their home. She was a special lady to many, and loved so much by her husband, children, grandchildren, and great. She will be missed forever. Marcie is survived by her husband, Fred of Belle Fourche; son, Fritz (Karen) of Belle Fourche; daughters, Barb (Scott) Graslie of Spearfish; Ginger Carlson of Oral, SD; 7 grandchildren, Amber, Kirsten, Erika, Nik, Nicole, Brianna, Cory; and 6 great grandchildren, Alexis, Lily, Riley, Lynnea, Alivia, and Kristopher. She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 infant children; grandson, Brian Tubbs; and sister, Leitha Abrahamson.
